Memorial - Evelyn
Evelyn Perry Lege
A Great Lady Evelyn Lege, long-time resident of Napa, California and foundress of the Richelieu Leger Family Association, passed away January 4, 2005, from complications due to cancer. A rosary and vigil service was held on January 9, 2005 at the Claffey and Rota Funeral Home in Napa and a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on January 10, 2005 at St. Apollinaris catholic Church inNapa. Internment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Helena. After marriage in 1946, Evelyn worked as a secretary for numerous admirals at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. In 1953, she and her husband moved to Napa where she worked as a sevretary for the Napa Unified School District. Evelyn was a lifetime/charter member ot the Leger Association she helped organize and served on its Board of Directors from its inception in 2000 until her death. She helped organize the LegerTrahan Family Reunion for Congres Mondial in Nova Scotia during the summer of 2004. Despite living far from Acadiana, she was extremely active in the activities of the association and very dedicated to preserving the Leger name, history and culture. Evelyn was a pioneer of St Apollinaris Parish and helped in every aspect of the parish from 1957 until her illness forced her to stop. She helped organize the St. Apollanairis School office and the Children's Choir and Christmas program. She was one of the original starters of the Bell Choir and played the organ for Mass. Evelyn was a member of the original Women's Guild at St. Apollinairis, the Hearts and Hands, the Parish Liturgy Committee and the YLI. She was also a member of Les Papillon travel Trailer Club in the Bay Area. Evelyn is survived by her husband of 59 years, John I. Lege of Napa and four sons, Steve and his wife Nancy of Davis, CA., Jerry and his wife, Margaret of Fullerton, CA., John of Napa, and Mike and his wife Po of Mesa, AZ.; three grandsons, two brothers - Jim Perry of Florence, OR. and Robert Perry of West Sacramento, CA.; one sister - Miriam Abbott of Galt, CA., numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Alice Perry, and one sister, Regina Stewart. Evelyn will be sadly missed by all those whose hearts she touched, especially the Board of Directors of this family association. We know she is smiling down on us all and watching over us. Keep us faithful to your dream, Evelyn.

Gene Whitten-Lege
November 4, 1938 ~ February 21, 2021 (age 82) Gene was a long time valued member of the Richelieu-Leger Family Association. He contributed his time, ideas, and money to make the association a wonderful way to reunite extended family members. Gene, a 50+ year resident of Houston, Tx, was born Eugene Lege in Abbeville, La. He was the eleventh of 12 children in a blended family that moved from Abbeville to Port Arthur, Tx. Speaking only French, he entered Kindergarden. After High School, he served as a Navy photographer in Europe, and earned a MSSW from UT Austin after getting his BA from Lamar University while working in the chemistry lab at Pure Oil and as a photolithographer with the Port Arthur News. He was the active CEO and co-founder with his long time wife, Pat Whitten, of In-Home Attendant Services. As a licensed and Certified Social Worker, he provided a life time of Leadership in policy and program development, advocacy, and multiagency initiative while serving in positions with the state of Texas, Catholic Charities, and home health agencies. As executive Director of Harris County Child Welfare, he led the agency to national certification and established several innovative children’s services. He piloted the first selfdirection initiative in Texas for people with disabilities and served on the first State CDS Workgroup to establish and expand consumer direction. He was active on several Boards, Advisory groups and committees. With all his many activities, he never forgot his Louisiana connections to his family and the Richelieu Leger Association and was a familar face at meetings and reunions. His passion, insight and energy will be missed.
